How it all started

As a child, I always loved science, learning new things, puzzles and figuring out how things worked. At an early age, I wanted to be a pediatrician by majoring in you guessed it Biology. It wasn't until high school that I realized that I didn’t care for Biology much and fail in love with Chemistry. To me Chemistry is the perfect union of science and math. Also, amazed at how easily I grasp the information, I went on to pursue a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Chemistry.

While obtaining my undergrad degree from Georgia Southern University is when I discovered a passion of being in the lab. I like getting my hands dirty, being presented with a problem/question, conducting an experiment, and determining if I am right or wrong. Of course, everyone loves the satisfaction of an accepted hypothesis, but I secretly enjoy a rejected hypothesis as well because I learned something in the process; which opens the door to various other questions and experiments, and that my friend is the never-ending cycle of learning I like to call Science.

If there ever could be something I loved more than Chemistry and being in a laboratory setting, it’s working with children. I love everything about being in the presence of a child, their curiosity of how things work, finding their place and voice in the world, their infectious laugh, unfiltered words, wacky sense of humor, simplicity of life, and the pure innocence of their love for people regardless of race, religion, and sexuality. Children keep you youthful, sharp, and quick on your toes. I believe children are our greatest asset and have never strayed too far from working with them in any capacity.

It wasn’t until high school that I learned you didn’t have to major in Biology to be a doctor. And it wasn’t until college that I truly discovered this vast world of science, the many different majors, disciplines, and career paths that you could take. I feel that this is something that is missing in education at the lower levels. Although at an early age children are very inquisitive and love science, I have found that it quickly diminishes as they get older. Science is no longer cool and you are labeled a geek or a nerd if you like it. Faced with the problem of the shrinking popularity of science particularly among underrepresented individuals, I saw a need and decided to fill it. Thus, Gordon’s Laboratory was born, my perfect union of science and children.

Gordon’s Laboratory will demonstrate every possibility that science offers covering all disciplines and careers including but not limited to Chemistry, Biology, Health science, physics, engineering, forensics, astronomy, geology, paleontology, oceanography, and meteorology. It will show children that science can be educational, fun, entertaining, and cool. That science is more than learning and memorizing facts and equations, but exciting hands on experiments teaching critical thinking, problem solving, creative, integrity, partnership, continuous improvement, and community.
